The South
Coast Labour Council is the peak union body on the South Coast of
NSW and covers the area from Helensburgh, South of Sydney to the
Victorian border and across to the Southern Highlands and adjoining
tablelands in the west. The membership of the Council are its 29
affiliated trade unions covering all areas of work whose combined
total membership in the region amounts to more than 50,000 working
people. The Council is recognised as a regional branch council by
the state peak body, Unions NSW and also has a direct affiliation
with the ACTU.
The South Coast Labour Council had its beginnings with meetings
and gatherings of workers in the early 1900s though it was not until
1928 that the Council was fully established with the election of
its first Secretary, Steve Best. From its inception when miners
and other working people decided to band together across industries
in the Illawarra, the objective was to form a strong united regional
voice to represent working people and their families. That objective
remains the same today.
